Classification of Earbuds by Material

Silicone Earbuds
Silicone earbuds are significantly more expensive compared to homemade alternatives, with a price difference exceeding 500 times. Before use, silicone earbuds need to be soaked in warm water to soften them for insertion into the ear canal. Key characteristics include:

Reusability: Can be reused up to 5 times.

Hardness: High hardness, which may cause ear canal pain and discomfort, making prolonged use ineffective.

Sound Insulation: While silicone is non-porous and non-breathable, its rigid structure often fails to conform perfectly to the unique shape of individual ear canals. This can result in air leakage through pinholes or fine gaps, reducing noise insulation effectiveness by approximately 20–30 decibels.

Comfort: The curved and soft nature of the ear canal makes it difficult for hard silicone earbuds to provide a comfortable fit. Prolonged use can lead to redness, swelling, and pain, especially during sleep or when lying on one side. Consequently, silicone earbuds are unsuitable for long-term use and fail to deliver consistent noise reduction or comfort.

Sponge Earbuds
Sponge earbuds are made from low-pressure foam mold materials or high-elasticity polyurethane, offering a smooth surface and slow rebound properties. Key features include:

Comfort: Designed to prevent ear pain, making them ideal for overnight use.

Noise Insulation: Provide sound insulation ranging from 25 dB to 40 dB.

Durability: Traditional sponge earbuds are typically disposable, as washing weakens their slow rebound effect. However, advancements in material science have led to the development of reusable sponge earbuds that can withstand washing and last for over six months.

Application: Widely used for sleep and noise reduction due to their comfort and effectiveness.

Wax Earbuds
Wax earbuds are among the earliest types of noise-proof earbuds. They can be softened by hand and molded to fit the shape of the ear canal. However, they have several drawbacks:

Hygiene: Less hygienic compared to other materials, as wax residue may remain in the ear canal and is difficult to clean.

Comfort: Prolonged use can cause ear canal swelling and pain, making them unsuitable for extended wear.

Application: Despite their customizability, wax earbuds are less popular due to hygiene concerns and discomfort.
